Retro football manager “Anpfiff” brings the 90s management feeling to your phone
“Anpfiff Fussball Manager” is a love letter to the management classics of the Amiga and DOS era — for iOS and Android, developed by the Karlsruhe-based indie studio VirtualART.
At its heart is a live text ticker that narrates every match like a radio commentator, half-time team talk in the dressing room included. You manage across three divisions, a cup and European competitions, while 54 clubs play along as independent AI, transferring and negotiating on their own. On top of that: stadium expansion, finances, training and an editor with shareable community datasets.
The business model is deliberately old-fashioned: a one-time purchase of €6.99, no subscription, no pay-to-win and permanently ad-free after purchase. The first season is free; on Android, players can alternatively continue indefinitely with occasional ads. A trial version runs straight in the browser at play.anpfiff.app.
“Anpfiff Fussball Manager” is available on the App Store and on Google Play. Press contact: [email protected]

Retro football manager “Anpfiff” brings the 90s management feeling to your phone
There is a generation of players who associate the rattle of a floppy drive with nights played through to the end: transfers until the small hours, the fight against relegation, promotion in the final week of the season. That exact feeling of the management classics from the Amiga and DOS era is what “Anpfiff Fussball Manager” brings to modern smartphones — without betraying the charm of the originals.
The heart of it is a live text ticker: every match is narrated minute by minute, the way it used to be on the radio. And when it gets tight at half time, the player chooses in the dressing room between firing the team up, calming them down or calling them out — a small gesture with noticeable consequences. You manage across three divisions of 18 teams and 34 matchdays each, plus a knockout cup with a live draw, promotion play-offs as the season finale and European competitions with a Champions, a Europa and a Conference tournament.
What makes the game feel alive are its opponents: 54 clubs act entirely on their own, negotiate fees with counter-offers, loan players out and stir up the transfer market. Add to that the expansion of your own stadium across five tiers, sponsorship and TV negotiations, a coaching staff of assistant manager, fitness coach and scouts, weekly training and training camps with risk and reward, as well as a youth setup that keeps producing talents knocking on the door of the first team.
The game puts particular weight on openness: a built-in editor lets you edit clubs, colours and players right inside the app. Datasets can be exported and shared — which is how community datasets emerge, letting players refill the game with new content again and again.
The business model deliberately runs against the trend. “Anpfiff” costs a one-time €6.99 — and then it belongs to the player. No subscription, no microtransactions, no energy bars and no ads after purchase. The ad-supported Android path only needs a connection to load ads; saves and the game core remain local without an account or server obligations. The first full season is free, and anyone who wants a taste before buying can play a trial version straight in the browser at play.anpfiff.app.
“Anpfiff” is developed by the independent Karlsruhe studio VirtualART — an indie project born out of genuine nostalgia rather than a marketing plan.
